Description
Two young boys were making this joke, this hoax of a jackalope in Wyoming, at about the same moment Shope was working on horned rabbits in his lab at the Rockefeller Institute (for Medical Research) in Princeton, New Jersey. The jackalope, an animal with the body of a jackrabbit and the antlers of a stag or deer, is a cultural icon of the American West. The creature’s image is sold in the region on all kinds of knickknacks, from postcards to shot glasses.
